Al Shaw is a news applications developer at ProPublica, a non-profit investigative news outlet based in New York City. Equal parts designer, developer and reporter, he covers environmental issues and disaster recovery and preparedness among other topics. Shaw’s project „Losing Ground“ about the century-long erosion of Louisiana’s coast won a Gold Medal from the Society for News Design, among other awards. His interactive maps surrounding FEMA’s response to Hurricane Sandy were honored with the Society of Professional Journalists‘ Sigma Delta Chi award. In 2015, he was part of a team that was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for a project about the human impact on the Colorado River. Before joining ProPublica, Shaw was the first in-house designer/developer at the political news website Talking Points Memo.
